What is a Propane Generator?
A propane generator is a generator that provides power through a gas engine supplying electrical power. Propane is the most widely used alternative fuel used in the world. Propane (also called LPG or LP for liquid petroleum gas) is derived from petroleum products during the processing of oil and natural gas. A propane generator provides clean, efficient and cost effective power for residential, commercial and recreational uses. Propane Generators are available in various sizes and power ratings (wattage/kilowatts) as portable generators, RV and standby generators. A propane generator can provide home power in an electrical outage for hours or even days. Propane generators are becoming more popular as world-wide as a constant source of power to rural areas through connection to gas lines because they can be up to 1/3 less the cost of standard electrical power.
Propane Generators for Emergency Use
Propane generators are mostly known for their use in emergency situations such as power outages, natural disasters and gas leaks. Portable propane generators, diesel generators and standby propane generators each have their own specific emergency power solutions. Propane filled cylinders in various sizes are readily available purchase at gas stations, small markets and large home improvement chains. They can be moved and transported safely and easily. These cylinders can be stored for a long periods of time and have less threat of fire hazards.
Some homes contain underground fuel tanks which will store the gas to fuel the propane generator. These large tanks will store enough propane (LPG) to power a home sometimes up to 4-5 days. This is the longest time period of all power emergency generators. Standby propane generators are commonly used for commercial and industrial industries due to their long operational time and value. A 500 gallon propane tank fueling a 7 kW standby generator can provide power to an averaged sized American residential home for up to 11 days. This equates to 2-5 days on a standard sized construction site.
Going Green With Propane Generators

Propane is a non-renewable fuel that burns cleaner than other fossil fuels. The EPA test have proven that propane fueled vehicles emit 50% fewer toxins and produce 30-90% less carbon monoxide. This is the same with all propane powered engines. Using a propane generator will provide a cleaner, odorless burn with less toxic fumes that will if spilled, dissipate into the air. These qualities aid in the reduction of greenhouse gases.
